Baccarat is played at a baccarat table with a croupier, two dealers and up to 14 players. All of them have definite places at the table. The croupier’s place is at one side of the table in the middle. He makes calls on the hands and directs players concerning play procedure. The two dealers stand in front of the croupier behind the chip stack. They pay/take the players' bets.

Baccarat is played with 4, 6 or 8 packs of cards. At first the dealers shuffle the packs of cards together. Then the croupier takes two packs of cards from the top and shuffles, or "laces" them into other packs of cards. After that he puts the cards in a "shoe."

The player to the right of the croupier becomes the "Banker" and deals two cards for the two hands called the Player's and the Banker's hands. The first card goes to the croupier and it is the first Player’s card. The second card goes under the corner of the shoe and it is the first Banker’s card. The third card is dealt to the croupier, this is the second Player’s card. The fourth card, the second Banker’s card is put under the corner of the shoe. Nobody has to deal. The hand with a total point value closest to 9 wins. Hands worth 9 or 8 are "naturals," but 9 beats 8. If the Player or the Banker has a natural and the other hand is lower, the natural hand wins. The players bet on "Player", "Banker" and “Tie”.

Cards Value

Suit of a card does not matter. Cards value is as follows:

How to Count Hands

Baccarat has drawing rules. In some circumstances, the third card may be dealt. The drawing rules are a bit complicated. However, they are compulsory and automatic in the online casinos.

Drawing Rules

When player or banker’ hand totals 8 or 9, the third card is not drawn.

  • When the Player's hand is 5 or less the third card is drawn to the Player's hand.
  • If the player does not draw the third card, the banker stands on 6 or more and takes the third card on 5 or less.
  • If the player draws the third card, the banker takes the third card according to Banker's drawing rule.
  • If the Banker's hand is 2 or less, the third card is taken regardless of the Player's third card.
  • If the Banker's hand totals 3, the Banker takes a third card unless the Player has an 8.
  • If the Banker's hand totals 4, the Banker takes a third card unless the Player's third card is a 0, 1, 8 or 9.
  • If the Banker's hand totals 5, he takes a third card in the event that the Player's third card is from 4 to 7.
  • If the Banker's hand totals 6, t he takes a third card in the event that the Player's third card is 6 or 7.
  • If the Banker's hand totals 7, he stands.

This is the table with the third-card drawing rules.

As you know, you can bet on Player, Banker or Tie. If you make a bet on the Player’s hand and win, you will get a 1:1 payout. If you bet on the Banker, you will also get 1:1, but the casino takes a 5% commission, which is collected at the end of the play. The Tie pays out 8:1 but this is the most undesirable bet. The house edge on the tie bet is 14.36%.
